Food Cupboard Festivities
When we asked our Food Cupboard Purchaser, Pam Yuhasz, about whether she could ever go grocery shopping without coupons, her eyes light up. “No way,” she laughs, “it’s an obsession.” |
Pam’s diligence and couponing prowess have far reaching benefits.
Recently, she saved so much of Grange Hill East Neighbourhood Group’s (GHENG’s) regular grocery budget she was able to pull together a holiday surprise.
She rallied the help of other volunteers to extend Food Cupboard hours on December 18th for an Open House Event. This meant visitors would receive a warm welcome, a hot drink, and have the chance to mingle with the volunteers.
But that wasn’t all. Those in need could assemble a hamper with their choice of root veggies, meat, fruit, chocolate, breakfast items and other goodies. It was enough food for 25 families to put together a festive meal.
“The smiles and appreciation from recipients of these unexpected gifts were the best part of it,” says Yuhasz. “It’s all about making others feel good. The Open House provided space to chat with the folks who came in and listen to them share their stories.”
Pam is in her fifth year of volunteering for the Grange Hill Neighbourhood Group. During this time, she has spent hundreds of hours collecting coupons, shopping, and completing price matches in grocery store line-ups to secure great deals.
Please thank her for her efforts if you happen to meet her. If you are lucky, she may share a savings tip with you. But beware! If she is in front of you at the grocery checkout, switch to a faster lane.
Couponing involves collecting discount coupons to save money on food or household purchases. You can help Pam by donating coupons (especially for school snacks) to the Food Cupboard. |
The Food Cupboard at 470 Auden Rd. helps meet the needs of the community. It could not exist without the helping hands of many volunteers. To them, we extend our thanks.
